00:00:00so as you might know I recently moved to Miami Florida and the new apartment needed a few upgrades and some of those I ended up making with my bamboo Labs X1 Carbon 3D printer and one of the first things I wanted to do in our new place
00:00:13was to set up a nice place for my book collection now as you can see behind me we have this beautiful Barrister bookcase but these books are not mine these belong to my wife who is clearly smarter and much more cultured than me
00:00:26but hidden away far in the back of a closet in my office in fact right here these here these are my books the entire Jack Reacher series plus a couple of odd science fiction titles mixed in for good measure all in paperback
00:00:42but eagle-eyed viewers will notice something interesting about the setup here these metal wire shelves made by ClosetMaid are about to collapse under the weight of all that action and adventure they are not supported at all
00:00:54on the sides so I thought I could just go and buy something to support them laterally but it turns out that ClosetMaid doesn't make any side supports Home Depot sells these back supports which help to clip the back of
00:01:07these shelves to the wall and I was really hoping that I could use them but when that didn't work and the shelves were still sagging I had to get a little creative as you know I recently bought the brand
00:01:19new X1 Carbon 3D printer from bamboo labs and let me tell you it's been a game changer but I've also been tinkering with free cat which is an open source CAD software package and I'm designing something pretty unique so get
00:01:33ready to witness the power of rapid prototyping although in my case the word rapid might be a bit of a misnomer hey everyone this is future Dan I just wanted to let you all know that I've
00:01:45also been doing a lot of work on the coinbot.com website there you can find all of the STL files for the closet supports that I've been talking about in this video in case you wanted to download them and print them out
00:01:56yourself and I also hope you leave some feedback about the website down below in the comments so I started by firing up freecad and sketching out several designs for the side supports the goal was to create a
00:02:08robust and effective solution that would prevent the shelves from bending now the first prototype I came up with was a bit blocky with only 90 degree angles it was a solid starting point but as you'll soon see I made a couple of rookie
00:02:21mistakes here's my initial prototype as you can see it's not quite the right size that's because I used millimeters when I meant to use centimeters so this little guy turned out to be a
00:02:34miniature version of what we actually needed but hey I got to print my first prototype without wasting a lot of filament after the scaling mishap I headed back to freecad for the second iteration
00:02:46now the second design looked promising but it had its own problems the support recesses were in the wrong location and ended up misaligned when I went to install them dang it so back to the drawing part but the thing I like about
00:03:00freecad and I assume that this is how most CAD packages work is that you can go back to the drawing board without starting completely from scratch usually you can just go back and reset the individual Dimensions that need
00:03:13adjustment and re-render the part this makes the prototyping and iteration process much more simple after changing a few dimensions and improving the design a bit I was ready to print my third attempt and it turns out that the
00:03:27third time is a charm this design addressed all of the previous issues and everything lines up perfectly but I also added some finishing touches to make it both functional and more aesthetically pleasing for example I
00:03:40decided to round all the corners and countersink the screw Mount holes allowing the screws to sit flush and provide just a touch of Polish I printed these in pla which is sturdy enough to provide the necessary strength and
00:03:52durability now this is where the magic happens by adding these custom designed side supports to the wire shelves we're Distributing the weight more evenly preventing any bending or sagging and
00:04:04just look at the transformation our once flimsy shelves are now super strong and ready to handle anything that Jack Reacher can throw at them but you may be asking what does any of this have to do with my coin sorting
00:04:17robot well the design process for my robot is just a bit more complicated but the steps are exactly the same prototype iterate refine and repeat and as you begin to prototype the first step is to plan out your design you can go
00:04:32through multiple versions of your ideas exploring different concepts and refining them along the way but just keep in mind that the journey is often more interesting than the finished product so just have fun
00:04:44so my friends stay tuned for the next part of our rapid prototyping Adventure we're going to refine our design conquer the challenges of 3D printing an inch closer to capturing stunning photos of pennies for now that's my two cents
00:04:58thanks for joining me today and don't forget to like subscribe and hit that notification Bell to never miss another adventure on this channel stay awesome and I'll see you in the next video take care everyone
