00:00:00good morning everyone and welcome back today is day three of my 30-day challenge to post something on YouTube every day for the entire month of September today I thought I'd briefly talk about where I learned to solder as
00:00:14a kid I really love taking things apart and trying to put them back together and I had varying levels of success doing that um I could definitely take things apart putting them back together was usually the hard part I also love taking
00:00:28things apart that were electronic and that includes using a soldering iron to desolder all the components on a particular board and trying to figure out what they did now I didn't really learn how to properly solder until I
00:00:41joined the Navy in 1991 in the Navy I was a nuclear electrician which means that I went to about two years of schooling in the Navy before I went out to the fleet in those schools I went to a nuclear a school
00:00:57which is when you receive your rating and like I said I was an electrician's mate so that means I learned a little bit about electronics and mostly about electrical Theory one of the courses that I took there was a soldering course
00:01:11it was like troubleshooting electronics and soldering and I learned uh the term the bigger the glob the better the job and how that was really inappropriate for the Nuclear Navy in reality uh if you watched any soldering
00:01:28videos on YouTube they're all pretty much going to say the same thing that I learned in the Navy and that is that you want to start with clean parts and you also want to use plenty of flux to make sure that you get good heat transfer the
00:01:42other thing I learned is that you want to have nice shiny Parts when you're done when you do that that means that your parts were cleaned and there was no contaminants during the soldering process for those of you who are
00:01:53interested I was stationed on board the USS George Washington which is an a nuclear aircraft carrier and and uh I was in the Navy from 1991 to 1997 now as far as this challenge is concerned it's not going that great
00:02:08we're not getting a lot of views but that's really not the point of this challenge the point is for me to get more comfortable in front of the camera and also get comfortable putting myself out there by posting something on
00:02:20YouTube every day now if any of you have feedback about things that I could do better things that you'd like to see on this channel or just feedback in general en about topics that you'd want to hear me talk about I'm I'm all ears so please
00:02:27leave a comment down below for now that's my two cents thanks for watching everyone and have a great day
